π Abstract
Indian English Literature has developed from a product of colonial contact into a diverse and influential literary tradition with a strong presence in contemporary world literature. Its evolution reflects the changing social, political and cultural history of India, from colonialism and the freedom movement to independence, postcolonial nation-building, globalization, migration and the digital age. This paper examines the development of Indian English Literature with particular attention to three interconnected dimensions: evolution, identity and global presence. It argues that English in Indian literature has gradually moved beyond its association with colonial authority and has been reshaped through Indian cultural practices, multilingualism, mythology, regional histories and social experiences. Writers such as Raja Rao, Mulk Raj Anand and R. K. Narayan established important foundations for Indian writing in English, while later writers such as Salman Rushdie, Anita Desai, Vikram Seth, Amitav Ghosh, Arundhati Roy, Kiran Desai, Jhumpa Lahiri and Aravind Adiga expanded its thematic and geographical possibilities. Contemporary Indian English Literature increasingly includes questions of caste, gender, migration, diaspora, ecology, urbanization, technology and cultural hybridity. The paper further examines the transformation of Indian English into a flexible literary medium capable of representing Indiaβs linguistic and cultural plurality. It argues that the global success of Indian writers should not be understood simply as the acceptance of Indian literature by Western publishing institutions; rather, Indian writers have actively contributed to reshaping the meaning of contemporary Anglophone literature.
