📝 Abstract
Recruitment and selection are among the most important human resource management functions in the retail industry because retail organizations depend heavily on frontline, supervisory and managerial employees to maintain store operations and customer service. The retail environment is characterized by large and recurring manpower requirements, varied job roles, customer-facing work, seasonal demand and the need for employees who can adapt quickly to operational routines. This research paper examines recruitment and selection practices in the retail industry with particular attention to recruitment sources, digital hiring, employee referrals, screening, interviews, selection techniques, candidate communication and challenges in attracting and selecting suitable employees. The study adopts a descriptive, analytical and secondary-data-based research approach. Published academic literature, government employment information, professional HR literature and retail-sector reports are reviewed to identify established practices and emerging trends. The literature indicates that retail recruitment increasingly combines traditional sources such as employee referrals, walk-ins and placement networks with online job portals, social media, applicant tracking systems and other digital channels. The study also highlights recurring challenges including high-volume hiring, time pressure, competition for frontline talent, seasonal workforce requirements, candidate drop-outs, turnover and the need to maintain selection quality. The paper proposes a structured recruitment and selection framework emphasizing job analysis, multiple sourcing channels, standardized screening, structured interviews, timely communication, documentation and post-selection evaluation. The study is intended to provide a practical academic framework for students, HR professionals and retail organizations seeking to strengthen the efficiency, transparency and consistency of recruitment and selection.
