This study analyzes the impact of the budget deficit on economic growth in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the period 2000–2023, distinguishing between short- and long-term dynamics. The ARDLECM approach confirms the existence of a cointegration relationship between growth and its determinants, with a positive effect of the deficit in the short term (+0.42) but a negative effect in the long term (-0.42). Private investment, on the other hand, has a positive and significant effect on long-term growth, while the real interest rate has an adverse effect. The error correction coefficient (-0.68) shows a relatively quick adjustment, with about 68% of imbalances corrected each year. These results support a selective and sustainable budgetary policy that favors productive spending and limits persistent deficits that could undermine long-term growth in the DRC.
