π Abstract
This research paper explores the role of fashion as a means of self-expression in contemporary young adult (YA) fiction. It argues that fashion is not merely a decorative element but a significant narrative tool through which characters communicate identity, emotion, and social position. Using a qualitative and interpretative methodology, the study analyzes selected YA texts alongside relevant theoretical frameworks and scholarly sources. The research focuses on key areas such as identity construction, the tension between individual expression and social conformity, cultural and gender identity, self-esteem, and socio-political commentary. The findings reveal that clothing plays a crucial role in shaping charactersβ thoughts, behaviors, and personalities through the concept of enclothed cognition. Fashion also reflects the struggle between the desire to stand out and the need to belong, highlighting common psychological conflicts among young individuals. Furthermore, the study shows that fashion acts as a medium for expressing cultural pride, challenging gender norms, and enhancing or limiting self-confidence. It also serves as a form of resistance and social commentary. Overall, the research concludes that fashion in YA fiction mirrors real-world youth experiences and provides deep insight into identity formation and social dynamics.
