📝 Abstract
The structure of the family system has undergone a significant transformation in modern society, shifting from traditional joint families to more individualized nuclear units. This change is largely influenced by factors such as urbanization, industrialization, increased mobility, changing economic roles, and evolving social values. In earlier times, joint families provided emotional security, shared responsibilities, and economic stability through collective living. However, with modernization, individuals increasingly prefer nuclear families due to greater independence, privacy, and flexibility in decision-making. At the same time, the relevance of joint family systems has not completely diminished. In many cultures, especially in developing societies, joint families continue to exist in modified forms, adapting to contemporary needs. Technological advancements and digital communication have also helped maintain family connections despite physical separation. Furthermore, changing gender roles, increased participation of women in the workforce, and shifting parenting styles have redefined family dynamics in both nuclear and joint settings. The modern family system is therefore characterized by a blend of traditional values and contemporary practices. While nuclear families promote autonomy and personal growth, joint families still emphasize unity, support, and cultural continuity. The ongoing transition reflects a dynamic balance between individual aspirations and collective responsibilities, highlighting the evolving nature of family as a fundamental social institution.
